Five Steps of How to Educate Yourself with Mural Art

Murals in public places has a few purposes: to beautify a space, to give identity to a place, and to educate or to enlighten you, the viewer. Nowadays one can see murals in any styles and almost everywhere - on walls, bridges, fences, doors, etc.

Styles can vary from realistic to abstract and they murals be done in many different techniques too. They can be hand-painted, created with cutouts, airbrushed, adhered to the wall or digitally manipulated.

There are places designated for mural views only - for example the Wynwood Art district in Miami - you will find a variety of murals done by many well-known street artists.

Themes in murals vary as well - you will find classical themes, such as pastoral landscapes, landscapes with people at work, idealized landscape with nature, versus contemporary themes that contain imagery related to our world today - politics, environment, behavior, etc.

Here are the five steps how to educate you with mural art:

Be a curious person! Look around you everyday - places you are going to are filled with public works, i.e. airports, libraries, etc. Ask yourself how it was created, what materials were used, what style, what is the artist name, when the work was created, etc.Visit a library - remember, it is a different feeling when you hold a real art book in your hands, and when you are looking through it, enjoying the images and reading titles, learning artists names, reading titles, learning about works location, its story, etc.Get in touch with some artists or museum staff and inquire about getting your e-mail on their e-mails lists that relate to mural art and public art - this way you will be receiving information on local events and you will have lots of things to choose from!Go to art walks and look for mural art all around you!!! How to find out about these? Just Google the key words 'art walks'. You will enjoy an evening with art (and wine!) that will enlighten you and will keep you up to date with how your area has been changing. Murals a.k.a. wall art will help you become more creative yourself, in any area of your life.Watch films and documentaries about art, murals, and street art.
