A Closer Look at What Red Dot Design Winner DesignCraft Has to Offer

DesignCraft made waves in 2012 as a Red Dot Design winner. Their winning entry was the well-known smartphone case with stylus. It is known as the Tin Tip Tie. To provide enhanced functionality, the case's wrist strap made it easy to carry a smartphone around the wrist. There was also an integrated stylus to use with the touchscreen. This proved ideal during the winter months when wearing gloves makes the touchscreen hard to use. Since becoming a Red Dot Design winner, DesignCraft has launched a number of other successful products as well.

One line of products that is unique, yet effective, car stand smartphone holders. They allow for up to a 6 inch display screen and are ideal for anyone who normally uses their smartphone, especially GPS, when driving. Each stand is designed to stand firmly on the dashboard of a vehicle without any risk of sliding or moving.

They have also released two lines of pouches for the iPad. They are made from a PU/leather blend and can hold any tablet that measures between 8 inches and 10 inches. Currently, there are four colors to choose from including white, brown, blue, and black. These sleek pouches not only make any tablet look great, but they also offer a valuable layer of protection. Once securely closed, they limit the risk of scratching and denting. These second line of pouches offer the same functionality but utilize a much different design.

Even with the release of other products, the Red Dot Design award winner has stayed true to what made them a fan favorite in 2012. They have released an ever-growing number of smartphone cases. Some of the most popular include a hard gloss finish, matte, grid, and fortune. Of course the Tin Tip Tie design is still available as well.

They have also released a separate line of smartphone cases for android devices. They include the flip, edge flip, and wallet designs. Similar to the iPhone cases, they offer excellent protection and sleek designs.

It is clear from all of their accessory designs that the overall design process starts in the same place. They focus on what consumers do with their mobile devices and design cases and accessories to provide enhanced protection and functionality in the hope of making the devices easier and more convenient to use. Their strength lies in the rare ability to combine functionality, aesthetics, and ease of use into a single package.

Design Tips on Banner Stand Design

f your business is exhibiting at an event or conference there are several important decisions to be made choosing the right banner stand.

With a swamped market place for banners below are useful tips to point you in the right direction. These will help you maximise your investment and create a lasting impression with visitors.

Choose the right Banner Stand

Sounds easy doesn't it, you land on a website like roller banners and are then led to choose the banner stand, send the artwork as easy as that. We all wish it was so simple, with so many to choose from where do you start.

For one don't choose the cheapest, they don't last very long and you could end up purchasing another very soon after the event. Cost shouldn't be first on your mind, more professional looking and long lasting banners stands will be a good spend. Printing material also differs on cheap stands they are printed out on cheap vinyl sometimes with banding in the graphic due to the ink jet print. Don't cut corners it could be hugely detrimental to your business image.

Decide how many times you will be exhibiting, this will affect the model of roller banner you will choose, higher end models last longer.

How to design your stand

Less is more on banners, your customers will only view it from a distance away avoid large paragraphs of text and stick to large impact photography.

Bear in mind flexibility in your design, will your banner be used only at exhibitions or can you use it in your reception area. This can provide your banner with multiple uses and saves money in the long run.

If you choose to use photography on your stand make them large enough so they keep the quality. Avoid copying an image from the web, once these are blown up to scale they loose quality and become very blurry. Choose an image from a royalty free library one which you could use on your identity across all your marketing literature to increase a brand awareness for your business.

Keep your stand design within company identity it helps customers remember your business. Colours should reflect your website and all other marketing literature, if you are struggling to reach an identity a good graphic designer can help your business to achieve this.

May seem obvious but keep all important information at the top of your banner design, create a slogan for your business if you don't have one, it helps customers to remember your company. contact information needs to go lower down on your stand, majority of visitors don't write down contact information, they prefer to collect a business card to look at later. Overall be conscious of time, if you add prices on your banner it will date quickly try to stick to generic content so it will last over time.

Web Design Is Not Always Fine

The most important element of web design is a good visual design. Any web design that is not visually appealing is a big turn off. It is important for a website to look clean and simple. An overcrowded design is not recommended. The first impression is the key to many visitors and re visitors. A good and attractive design ensures that the visitor will spend some time looking around.

The next element that makes a good web design is a simple and thoughtful user interface. The first thing that we need to determine is that the user is able to find his information of interest with ease. A careful navigation and consistent layout looks cool and neat. It is easy for the viewer to find content areas.

Primary Navigation looks good above the fold. The computer screens today have capabilities to hold greater number of pixels. The top 500 -600 pixels are said to be above the fold or something which the user is able to see as a first glimpse. The main links of the website are usually acceptable when they are above the fold so that the information seeker finds his required link at the first sight.

It is thoughtful to repeat the navigation in the footer if the content in the webpage is large enough to make it scrollable. With these links like terms of service can also be used. A meaningful content and precisely written is usually acceptable. No one in interested in reading long paragraphs about the stuff that indicates you are beating around the bush. People love descriptions with photographs. Contents and links in the middle of pages arises curiosity in the readers.

It is not a good practice to avoid contact information in a website. If a prospective client is looking for ways to contact you, it is a big turnoff if he is unable to find a dedicated link that allows him to see modes of communicating with you or similar information. Typically a phone number, an email address and a contact form is enough information and means for a person to get in touch with you.

There can be nothing better than a search field. Google offers custom search to websites when applied. For a person who uses word press, this information comes in, search is already provided along with WordPress.

A sitemap is another important element one must have in his website. If it is a complex website, then it becomes all the more important. A good sitemap lists out all the pages and how they are linked to each other. The sitemap is for the reader to view how to navigate through pages and which page leads to another.

Design should always be separated from content. A good web design must have cross browser compatibility. CSS and other scripts allow this to happen easily. Web optimized images are important because no one likes to wait for an image any longer.

Statistics and analytics are good to have tools for you to see how many people visited your website. These elements are important for a good web design.

Information Design With the Five Hat Racks Principle

As an user experience designer and former graphic designer, I know that the way that information is displayed is most of the times as important as the content of the information itself. That being said, there are some scientific, quantifiable factors behind Information Design, and there are also some non-quantifiable variables, that we may agree on calling Art.

The Five Hats Rack principle is on the scientific side of Information Design, since is oriented to organizing and displaying information on a limited and quantifiable way: any type of information, regardless of the specific application, can be organized by Category, Time, Location, Alphabet and Continuum.

Category refers to grouping by similarity or relatedness. For instance, if we're organizing animals we might want to divide them by species; on an online retail website, an organization by category (clothing, electronics, appliances, etc.) would be probably the most useful for customers. Now, let's say that we're soccer fans and want to design a chart with all the countries that have won the World Cup. The two obvious categories for this would be countries that have won the cup and those who have not; we might want to add a category with the runners-up, as well.

Time is simply the organization by chronological sequence: a T.V. guide schedule, a timeline of events, a recipe. In the case of our Soccer World Cup chart, we might want to display a timeline with all the tournaments and their host countries.

Location refers to organization by geographical or spatial reference. Any map is an example of this type (subway maps as well, for even when they don't utilize an exact map, there is a spatial reference between stations). If we wanted to include this type in our Soccer World Cup chart, we might include a world map with all the federations that participate on the FIFA tournament.

Alphabet means organization by alphabetic sequence. Dictionaries, directories and indexes are organized this way. This type of organization is used alone only when no other way of organizing is appropriate. In the example of the Soccer World Cup chart, we might want to list all the countries who have participated on the tournament, indicating how many times they have been present.

Finally, Continuum (sometimes called Hierarchy) refers to organization by magnitude: low price to high price, most popular songs, etc. This is useful when there exist a common measure to compare different items of a group. We could include in our example chart a list with the countries who have won the cup more times, or a list with the all-time top scorers.

These strategies for organizing and displaying information are rarely used alone. Normally two or more are used, and sometimes all of them are necessary for explaining some complex information. You can see a chart with the example of the Soccer World Cup I used on my website, where I incorporated all the five types of organization into one diagram.

How to Design Your Own T-Shirts

Designing your own T-shirts and other apparel is a fun process and can be pretty simple. The first thing you need to know is what printing method you will be using for your T-shirts. The second thing you need is the appropriate software. As a graphic designer, I highly recommend the Adobe software. For the methods outlined in this article, you will require Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Types of T-shirt prints

Transfers is a simple but cheap method of T-shirt printing. It consists of printing on a special sheet of paper and then transferring the design onto the t-shirt using a heat source such as a house hold iron or T-shirt heat press. This method is cheap and the transferred design will not stay very long. Sometimes you will notice chips and cracks after just a few washes. The advantage of this method however is that you can print full color designs in raster format.

The best method of T-shirt printing is Silk Screening. Silk screening consists of ink being pressed through templates called screens and applied directly to the T-shirt. This process is done once per color, so if your T-shirt has 3 colors, it must pass through 3 color screens. Once all colors have been screened on, the T-shirt passes through an oven of sorts where the ink dries and becomes permanent. Since inks are applied individually, the silk screen process requires vector graphics with a pre-determined number of colors. Usually no more than 4 colors otherwise your T-shirt would take way to long to produce and your production costs would go up considerably. Silk screening is also the best method for mass production since large printing companies have large silk screen machines that can produce many shirts in sequence.

Designing for Silk Screen

As mentioned previously, silk screen method requires vector graphics. To create vector graphics, you need a vector imaging program such as Adobe Illustrator. The problem is, many designers prefer to design in Adobe Photoshop as opposed to Illustrator, but Photoshop is a raster imaging software, not vector.

Luckily, there is a workaround. You can design your t-shirt in Photoshop at a very high resolution, flatten your image, copy and paste it into an Illustrator canvas and then use the Trace tool to convert the graphic into Vector. From there, you can separate your colors and save it in a Vector format such as .AI or .EPS. The trace tool is not perfect but works quite well for this application.

Designing tips

When designing your T-shirt in Photoshop, make sure you stick to only a few colors. Avoid any shades and gradients in your T-shirt design.

When creating your canvas in Photoshop, fill the background layer with the desired color of your T-shirt

When using the Trace tool in Illustrator, set the amount of colors to the number of colors on your shirt + the background color. Once the design is vectorized, delete the background color.

It is also necessary for your logo to be memorable. This is the reason why taking on the services of a profession logo design company holds utmost importance in this regard as they would definitely help you accomplish your creative logo designing goals. Look up a few logo design companies to evaluate the needs of your company

The first thing that you need to do is seek recommendations and referrals from other professionals in your field. Also, you can research a few logos over the internet and acquire information about the design firms that have created the ones that you like.

Give a critical looks to the portfolio of the firm that you are interested in

When you go through the portfolios of certain LD firms, you are bound to see hundreds and thousands of logos that they created. However, make sure that you do not get boggled by the quantity of logos in their portfolio. Rather, you need to look for quality logos, which you believe are well-designed and can fit well with the image of your Agency.

Ask the company how they would commence communication throughout the project

This is extremely important. A professional Graphic Design firm is one that keeps regularly in touch with its clients and is willing to work on face-to-face basis as well as through email, video calls, instant messaging and phone.

Consider the questions that the graphic design company asks you

You need to pay serious attention to the kind of questions that the representatives of the potential LD company asks you. They must question you about the goals, history, products, services, competitors and the target audience of your business. Remember, if the agency does not show any interest in your business, you can rest assured that they would not be paying any attention to the details of your logo.

Cheap logo designer vs. professional logo Design Company

Make sure that you do not get fooled by cheap logo designers that offer a plethora of designs that, according to them, have been designed by an experience team. Do the math and think whether it is practical for a professional company to charge just $99 for a logo? Believe it or not, experienced and professional LD companies charge around $40 - $150 per hour!

Ask the logo designing company for references

Professional graphics designing companies actually have a section on their website that is devoted to client testimonials and references via text or video. The best thing is to get contact information about the company's previous clients and get in touch with them with questions about their overall satisfaction regarding the functionality of the company.

Following all of the steps given above is surely going to help you locate a professional web design agency that is bound to deliver outstanding results!

Graphic Design - A Comprehensive Guide

Graphic Design - A Comprehensive Guide

One of the most popular forms of art in today's world is graphic design. This form of art is utilized in many different ways. Individuals that engage in digital art are professionals that specialize in creating visual forms of communication that combine certain elements, such as word, images and specific ideas in order to convey some type of information to the individuals that make up the audience that will observe the art. Industry professionals are directly responsible for taking various forms of media and arranging them in such a way that a particular message is conveyed successfully. Popular forms of media used in this type of art include packages, photographs, posters, drawings, and websites. Special focus is placed on the elements of shape, color and texture. In this comprehensive guide, you will learn many facts pertaining to the art of graphic design.

The Effectiveness of Visual Communication

Various types of studies have concluded that visual communication is one of the most successful forms of communications for individuals, organizations and businesses. According to the information from case studies, sight is the most commonly used of all of the senses that humans possess. The information also includes that 75% of all of the stimuli that is contained in the environment is received through the visual based reception processors of humans. When the University of California conducted a study, they were able to conclude that 55% of all that a particular audience learns is a direct result of visual messages presented to them. Visual aids, such as the art of graphic design, assist in helping individuals retain the messages that they have received, according to the Wharton Research Center. When information is presented in a verbal fashion, only 10% of it is retained. However, when combined with graphic design pieces, the retention rate moves up to an amazing 50%. Each piece of art created through graphic design is utilized to reach a certain objectives. It has been found that audience objectives are at least 67% successful. This was established by Decker Communications. If you have a need for an art form that will relay certain types of communications in a visual manner, graphic design is the best option.

The Creative and Innovative Approach

Individuals that specialize in digital art combine their creativity with various forms of innovative technology in order to effectively communicate their ideas. These professionals are known to take drawings, paintings, pictures, and even images generated by computers to create visual images that will be retained and recalled precisely by the audience that is subjected to the images. You may find graphic design pieces in many different places. Examples of these include logos that are associated with certain brands, personal and professional websites, on business cards, on specially designed advertisements, located on books, throughout brochures, on the packages of certain products, on billboards, in magazines, on newspapers, located on posters, on greeting cards, and even on vehicles through wraps and signs. Digital art is all around us, and it is quite possible for one person to see millions of graphic design art pieces each and every single day.

Graphic Design versus Web Design

Many people confuse graphic design and web design by believing that they are the same. However, this is not accurate. Web design is based on the habits that are associated with the target audience of the website. Each page on a website interacts with other pages; whereas, the pages designed through graphic design art do not interact with each other. While it is true that websites communicate through pictures, they most commonly relay messages through content. People that visit websites scan the information listed on the pages for specific keywords, certain types of phrases and even icons that assist in maneuvering them to other pages. Graphics, images and various types of typography are utilized in the art of graphic design to produce a certain idea. While it is true that digital artists have the ability to create graphics that may be used on a website, they are not programmers. Web designers use all of the same elements that graphic design artists utilize. However, instead of focusing on standard media types that are offline, they use the internet to display all of their created artwork. Digital art is not limited to programming, whereas web design is limited by programming.

Conclusion

Digital art is a unique type of art. It is a visual form of communication that aids in presenting ideas and other types of messages to individuals. In some instances, it is used to identify a product, a service, a company, an individual, or an organization. Individuals that specialize in this type of art often rely on words, images, texts and other types of media in order to create a specific design and/or message. While digital art may be used on websites, it is not the same as web design in that it is not limited by the programming languages that are utilized on the World Wide Web. It has been established that visual communication is one of the most detailed and beneficial forms of communication - especially for organizations and businesses. If you have an idea or a message that you would like to be displayed through art, graphic design is an option that is sure to bring you high levels of success.
