Mural Artists Behind the Scene

Mural Artists (Behind the Scene) Most of you are enjoying looking at murals and many of you would love a mural in your homes or offices. However, not everyone can afford one, at least this is what most of you are thinking... Murals are not as expensive as it seems. Here is some 'food for thought' for you - when getting an artist to paint a mural, you are not planning to replace the mural too soon or you won't replace it at all! How much do you pay for your furniture that you are going to get rid of in two-three years? And how much does the mural cost? While questioning the 'expensive' or 'affordable' one would have to question why murals are what they are and how they are done. There are many things involved. Besides its intellectual and artistic side, mural work is a very physical task. The artist has to have liability insurance that he has to pay for. He has to bring and install one or more scaffolds (or rent these) and set up the working space. Working on a scaffold demands physical effort while climbing up and down during the day. If standing for a long time legs and feet become tired. Is sitting on a stool, back is never straight and one gets back pain. If painting on a high wall, one has to reach for every corner, and he might find himself standing on top of his toes for a very long time! Same thing happens when painting the very bottom of the wall - one has to sit with his back bend forward or in a squatting position. When painting a ceiling things get worse - one has to paint standing or sitting with his head bend toward the back, which is an awkward and dangerous position for one's head. When sitting in this position for long time, one gets head, neck, and back pain. Therefore, don't be surprised if the artist will work six hours instead of eight, or he will take longer breaks while stretching and lying down in floor. Ceiling, Havre de Grace Maryland Things get more complicated when the artist has to transfer the drawing or use cutouts and such. As you can see, the process of mural art painting is not only about inspiration, but also about many challenges, and I hope you will appreciate it in a different way. In conclusion, I would like to invite you to read Michelangelo's despairing poem while painting the Sistine Chapel: "Here like a cat in a Lombardy sewer!Swelter and toil! With my neck puffed out like a pigeon, belly hanging like an empty sack, beard pointing at the ceiling, and my brain fallen backwards in my head! Breastbone bulging like a harpy's and my face, from drips and droplets, patterned like a marble pavement. Ribs are poking in my guts; the only way to counterweight my shoulders is to stick my butt out. Don't know where my feet are- they're just dancing by themselves! In front I've sagged and stretched; behind, my back is tauter than an archer's bow!" Georgeta Fondos Photo I am a professional mural, fiber artist, and college professor. Mural Art Ideas For Residential and Commercial Spaces

I am addressing this article to whose of you who are not artists, who don't know much about art, and who are looking for an artist muralist to paint murals for your home, office, or any other commercial space. Before starting, I would encourage you all to take an Art Appreciation class at your earliest convenience. A class like this is a must for every person, no matter of the major, for art is all around us and we shall learn about all its faces so we can appreciate it. Art Appreciation classes are offered at any community college. When it comes to murals for your home or for a commercial space, such as a restaurant or a hotel oftentimes you might not have any ideas of what it is that you want on your walls or ceiling. You can ask the artist to come up with some ideas. However, it is very helpful for the artist if you can describe in a few words what you visualize for your wall - it can be a favorite theme, style, character or at least a color palette... You would have to specify if you want a mural in a naturalistic style (a.k.a. realistic) with effects of trompe l'oeil or an abstract one? Also, you would have to let the artist know if you are familiar with any artwork or any artist's name that has created artwork similar to what you want. These are very important details for the artist because he or she would have to do some research (it can be part of the consultation fee or you would be charged per hour) The more detail you give to the artist, the less time the artist will spend looking for images or designing ideas for you. There are two ways of selecting ideas for your mural - you can select from other artists' artwork and ask the artist muralist if he can create a mural similar to provided examples. In this case many changes might intervene - the format, the content, the color palette, etc. For example, you might like a painting that is rectangular but your mural has to be square. The artist would have to come up with a sketch to show you what changes would have to be done so that the mural will be well balanced and will contain anything that you might want. Cabana Mural with Greek Island Views Lantana Florida Another way, which will be the most preferred by a mural professional, is when you give the artist the freedom to come up with an idea for you. The artist will have a look at your home and will have some questions for you to determine your tastes. This way he/she could come up with unique and original designs, and I can assure you that he will work on this with lots of passion. First, this is because this is a new approach, something that the artist has not created before, and second, he can develop a design that fits his tastes and his artistic needs as well. Moreover, all these 'original' designs might become part of a mural's publication and /or artist's presentations, etc. Georgeta Fondos Photo I am a professional mural and fiber artist. Mural Ideas

As I have mentioned before I am addressing my articles to those of you who have no education in art and are interested in murals for your home or business. My articles' purpose is to help you in choosing the right artist and the right design, as well as to educate you.

When it comes to mural art ideas oftentimes people jump into inquiring for a copy of somebody's existent work that they saw in someone's house or a copy of a well known artwork. This happens because this is a quick way to decide on a design, and one wouldn't have to spend too much time in thinking what he or she wishes for.

However, from my experience people hope for original design, something that fits their tastes and needs. Therefore, when you have a chance to list through an artist's portfolio, it is always good to use an existing image of a mural that you prefer only as reference, while giving the artist an idea of what it is you envision on your wall.

Usually it is the artist who will do the rest of the work: he would do the research for you and would come up with thousands of ideas that you can choose from. It might be that the artist will provide various photos and images or he will design some small sketches for you to help you understand how your wall can be filled up and create a harmonious balance.

An artist expresses himself easily when the customer is listening and is willing to learn and collaborate. Many times ideas are being clarified through a simple conversation. However, because most people are busy and wrapped up in their own worlds, and they don't have time to communicate, it is up to the artist to work everything out.

A good artist will care about completing a project of your dreams. He/she will find ways to work out a good price for you, while looking forward to a successful project. You should remember that the mural will be there forever (unless you are planning to modify it when you replace your curtains or furniture!). Therefore, it has to contain anything you have planned and dreamed about. Just go for it!

Mural Sketches - Is it Worth Paying?

The answer is YES; you have to pay for the initial design, although many muralists still choose to include the design price into the total cost of the project, depending on size and complexity of the work.

But what is a sketch and what is a design? Is there a difference? Why does it cost money? How is it done? How much time does it take?

Please note that a 'sketch' is a drawing of an idea that is done rapidly and it is meant to capture the very essence of the idea and composition. A 'design' is something that has been developed further and usually it takes hours and even days to create one.

We all know that when we start a project we have a vague idea of what it represents. This idea gets developed when out down on a piece of paper. Writers will write down a small paragraph that describes the main ideas, musicians will start with some notes, and artists will create a quick drawing. However, all this is still too ambiguous and hard to understand by somebody else. This is because an artist uses a personal visual language, which is rough and unclear for the beginning.

Therefore, an initial design has to be developed by the artist based on the sketch. The initial sketch might become a source of multiple designs (not just one) for a mural project. And, as I said before, it will take much more time than the sketch itself; this is because a more detailed design is a thorough analysis of the project. A lot of details would have to be added and, depending on the project, a lot of research would have to be done.

Drawing accurately is an important task. This is when the artist puts on paper all possible details, and attention to proportion and perspective is crucial. For those of you who are not artists this seems to be a piece of cake, something done rapidly, in just a few minutes! And this is the reason that you would not consider that you have to pay for the design. But 'minutes' is time!

Moreover, the artist is a professional who has a degree or more, has many awards and good reviews, and has achieved good experience over the years. He/she is there for you to solve a problem based on all this experience. This is why you have to appreciate his/her time and pay for the design, no matter how much time was spent. A design is time and time is money. I hope you agree...

Mural Artists (Behind the Scene) Most of you are enjoying looking at murals and many of you would love a mural in your homes or offices. Most residential murals are created with the purpose to beautify the space but also to give it more depth and definition. Trompe l'oeil is one of the favored techniques by many. This technique has been used for years; you can see some great examples with trompe l'oeil murals in early Roman frescoes.
