Mural Art Ideas For Residential and Commercial Spaces

I am addressing this article to whose of you who are not artists, who don't know much about art, and who are looking for an artist muralist to paint murals for your home, office, or any other commercial space. Before starting, I would encourage you all to take an Art Appreciation class at your earliest convenience. A class like this is a must for every person, no matter of the major, for art is all around us and we shall learn about all its faces so we can appreciate it. Art Appreciation classes are offered at any community college. When it comes to murals for your home or for a commercial space, such as a restaurant or a hotel oftentimes you might not have any ideas of what it is that you want on your walls or ceiling. You can ask the artist to come up with some ideas. However, it is very helpful for the artist if you can describe in a few words what you visualize for your wall - it can be a favorite theme, style, character or at least a color palette... You would have to specify if you want a mural in a naturalistic style (a.k.a. realistic) with effects of trompe l'oeil or an abstract one? Also, you would have to let the artist know if you are familiar with any artwork or any artist's name that has created artwork similar to what you want. These are very important details for the artist because he or she would have to do some research (it can be part of the consultation fee or you would be charged per hour) The more detail you give to the artist, the less time the artist will spend looking for images or designing ideas for you. There are two ways of selecting ideas for your mural - you can select from other artists' artwork and ask the artist muralist if he can create a mural similar to provided examples. In this case many changes might intervene - the format, the content, the color palette, etc. For example, you might like a painting that is rectangular but your mural has to be square. The artist would have to come up with a sketch to show you what changes would have to be done so that the mural will be well balanced and will contain anything that you might want. Another way, which will be the most preferred by a mural professional, is when you give the artist the freedom to come up with an idea for you. The artist will have a look at your home and will have some questions for you to determine your tastes. This way he/she could come up with unique and original designs, and I can assure you that he will work on this with lots of passion. First, this is because this is a new approach, something that the artist has not created before, and second, he can develop a design that fits his tastes and his artistic needs as well. Moreover, all these 'original' designs might become part of a mural's publication and /or artist's presentations, etc. I am a professional mural and fiber artist. As I have mentioned before I am addressing my articles to those of you who have no education in art and are interested in murals for your home or business. My articles' purpose is to help you in choosing the right artist and the right design, as well as to educate you.

When it comes to mural art ideas oftentimes people jump into inquiring for a copy of somebody's existent work that they saw in someone's house or a copy of a well known artwork. This happens because this is a quick way to decide on a design, and one wouldn't have to spend too much time in thinking what he or she wishes for.

However, from my experience people hope for original design, something that fits their tastes and needs. Therefore, when you have a chance to list through an artist's portfolio, it is always good to use an existing image of a mural that you prefer only as reference, while giving the artist an idea of what it is you envision on your wall.

Usually it is the artist who will do the rest of the work: he would do the research for you and would come up with thousands of ideas that you can choose from. It might be that the artist will provide various photos and images or he will design some small sketches for you to help you understand how your wall can be filled up and create a harmonious balance.

An artist expresses himself easily when the customer is listening and is willing to learn and collaborate. Many times ideas are being clarified through a simple conversation. However, because most people are busy and wrapped up in their own worlds, and they don't have time to communicate, it is up to the artist to work everything out.

A good artist will care about completing a project of your dreams. He/she will find ways to work out a good price for you, while looking forward to a successful project. You should remember that the mural will be there forever (unless you are planning to modify it when you replace your curtains or furniture!). Therefore, it has to contain anything you have planned and dreamed about. Just go for it!
