Trompe L'oeil Murals

Georgeta Fondos Photo I am a professional mural, fiber artist, and college professor. My mural portfolio consists of hand-painted public and residential murals in various styles, most of them located in South Florida. I am versed in both representational (realistic) and abstract art, and I am always looking forward to projects that challenge my thinking in generating original ideas. Most of my murals are painted in naturalistic style, using the trompe l'oeil effects (from French "to trick the eye".) Georgeta Fondos http://www.muralsbygeorgeta.com/ Rate this Article

Murals in Art Deco Style

Yes, indeed, murals in the Art Deco style are definitely very different from other murals as the title implies. Murals come in different styles and one of them is the Art Deco style. Art Deco style started in France and is known to have spread rapidly in the 1930s and the 1940s. Art Deco is considered an eclectic style because it is a combination of richly colored geometric, decorative, ornamental elements and motifs. This style has affected many areas of art including architecture and interior design and furniture. It also has affected the architecture of many cities in the US and one of them is Miami Beach. Miami Beach is a great place to visit. This area has a great collection of Art Deco buildings, such as hotels and apartment houses, dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. Because the Miami Beach Art Deco district has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places the Historic Preservation Department of Miami has required that all the buildings have been restored and painted in their original soft colors. Art Deco style continues to inspire mural artists, and an example would be the Mural for the Tides Hotel Lobby (2013) located in the Historic Art Deco District in Miami Beach on 1220 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Tides Hotel Lobby Mural, Miami Beach, Florida Because the hotel is located in the historic District and its exterior has been inspired by the 1930s Art Deco style, the City of Miami Historic Preservation Department has requested that the mural at the Tides had to depict a fusion of elements characteristic both to the South Beach Art Deco style and to the design of the hotel's lobby. Therefore, the mural is a blending of these elements. It consists of three panels (roughly 12x5 feet, 20x5, and 13x5) that add to the lobby's elegance through the richly decorated forms in pastel colors. The design consists of a vocabulary of abstracted tropical motifs for which South Beach is known for: the sunny beaches and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, sea shells, the elegant palm fronds, and of course, its vibrantly colored architecture with geometric patterns. The mural was painted on canvas, which was adhered to the lobby's walls is an amalgam of undulating, colorful, and suggestive shapes that connect nicely with the hotel's lobby decor. Murals with Florida Scenery

If you are looking for a mural artist to paint a mural with Florida landscape, you might want to consider reading this article to learn about the variety of subjects that Florida can offer. Florida has been a great place: beaches and palm trees are a preferred subject for a mural. However, there are so many other things you can choose from - from the variety of birds and reptiles to flowers, plants, and trees. You can also inquire about an aquatic subject matter. A mural will always look more complex if combining many of the things that Florida can offer. Also, there are many architectural elements and textures that can be used to create an original design for your mural. Of course one cannot compare Florida architecture with the abundance of styles in cities like New York or Boston, or Europe... However, your mural can combine many architectural elements and styles from different cultures too. For example, the Dome in Rotunda at the Lauderhill City Hall (Florida) - a twenty feet diameter and six feet deep painting, combines both Florida fauna and flora along with an elegant decorative band from the once colorful Greek Parthenon. The band is located at the very base of the mural, followed by a coral stone border characteristic to Florida. Both, the band and the border add sobriety and elegance to the mural. Dome in Rotunda Mural Lauderhill City Hall Florida The mural represents a few Florida birds, trees, flowers, and plants. The decorative band and the coral base were added to increase the Trompe L'oeil effect, which gives depth to the dome. An important factor in getting a realistic, believable view is the use of the source of light. Everything is modeled keeping in mind the source of light. The cast shadows are important too. This is what makes it a Trompe L'oeil design. Another example of a mural with Florida scenery is the East Curved Wall (10x27 feet) located in the same building. The composition is very complex. One half shows a Florida gingerbread design balustrade and another half, a modern balustrade with Greek Ionic columns. East Curved Wall detail Lauderhill City Hall Florida In the background one can see from left to right a waterfall with trees and plants, a peacock seating on the gingerbread balustrade, a still life on the balustrade in the very center, a sable palm, the city hall building in the far back, a golf course with Jackie Gleason and his Rolls Royce gold cart in the right panel, football helmets, and the American, Florida, and Lauderhill flags. Most residential murals are created with the purpose to beautify the space but also to give it more depth and definition. Trompe l'oeil is one of the favored techniques by many. This technique has been used for years; you can see some great examples with trompe l'oeil murals in early Roman frescoes.

Top Five Reasons Why You Should Use a Professional Artist Muralist For Your Murals

Let's start with the word 'professional' - what does it mean to you? If you do your hair or if you do not feel well you are going to visit a 'professional'... and I guess this tells you already that whatever you want to do you need a "professional". Same works in the area of mural art.

There are many amateur muralists and the difference between a professional and an amateur is huge. A professional mural artist is someone who knows his job very well. You can find a good professional artist by recommendation or by reading reviews and checking on muralists' portfolios.

Here are the top five reasons why you should use a professional:

You shall approach a professional mural artist because he has a rich background in fine arts and has a degree in art - Bachelors and/or Master's. Having a degree in art means that the artist is familiar with important notions that will be applied to your mural project - design, composition, scale, proportion, perspective, color to name just a few.You need a professional mural artist because he/she is familiar with other artists and other artistic and cultural styles. This means that per your request, the mural artist will be able to provide a variety of options and introduce you to the various artists and their styles, to various cultures and their styles so you can familiarize yourself and choose your subject with ease. When you pay money for an artwork like a mural, you should make sure to get well informed about the subject, content and how the mural was created. Eventually you will feel proud to communicate these to your family and friends. You want to work with a professional artist (muralist) because he/she has attained a style and has gained good reputation and recognition through some important projects in the art field - exhibitions, articles about the artist, publications by the artist, mural projects and mural preparatory designs. You will enjoy working with a professional because he/she has very good skills in drawing and painting and demonstrates mastery in sketching ideas for you quickly and clearly. A professional can create two types of sketches a.k.a. designs - quick designs and more elaborate ones. A quick design will give you an idea about the subject and the artist can create it during the first or second consultation. However, if you decide on a more detailed work in color, a more elaborate sketch will be needed and usually this will be at an additional cost depending on the time spent on it.You have to hire a professional because he/she has a rich portfolio with a variety of subjects, published works, works created in public places (you can visit these places yourself) collaborations with other artists, good reviews, etc. If you find it difficult to distinguish between an amateur and a professional mural artist, visit a museum or a local art show, and talk to other artists.Georgeta Fondos Photo I am a professional artist and educator. Benefits of Murals Done by a Professional Artist

A mural has a lot of uses, it is not only meant to beautify a particular place but it also lends identity to the place, educates and engages the viewer. A mural artist can focus on using local materials in the area to foster community partnerships and pride and the mural can even boost the local economy when it is completed.

Hiring a professional mural artist who has completed many projects in the past is beneficial because they can make sure that deadlines will be met. A professional muralist who has a large portfolio is most likely to come up with great ideas and generate creative designs because of his experience and the amount of time spent reaseraching other projects.

Contrary to popular beliefe Mural art is not as expensive as many people think. Seek out a professional muralist and get an estimate and you may be surprised by the result. Murals are meant to last for a long time if well done and properly sealed.

Murals are a good investment and can add significant value to your home. A professional mural artist can be a great asset in choosing the right mural works for your home. He can draw from his knowledge and experience and can provide many examples to choose from.

An artist that has had ample training would be able to provide a historical perspective and background that would make the mural extra special and original. In doing so, the mural would have a community following and will become a community context as well as venue.

Another important aspect is that a professional artist can educate and explain what is needed to maintain a mural. During the consultation process a professional artist can sketch and illustrate your ideas and give you a visual diagram of the direction of the project. It is very important for the artist to have your vision in mind and to be able to capture this vision, therefore communication between the client and the artist is critical to the success of the project.

Many times people feel unsure about the subject for the mural and they can rely on the professional muralist to come up with suggestions. The investment made in consultation with a professional muralist will save you a lot of time, energy and money in the long run.

I am a professional artist and educator. My portfolio consists of hand-painted public and residential murals in various styles, most of them located in South Florida.
